Bear Peak via The Mesa Trail and Bear Canyon - 12.95 Miles Round-Trip Boulder's trail network offers a number of ways to reach Bear Peak (8,461'). At the mouth of Bear Canyon, I stopped to strap on the Microspikes to navigate the quarter mile of icy steeps. A 6-foot (1.8 m) dryfall atop the slide is passable to agile climbers, but progress beyond is quickly halted by a much higher dryfall. Dogs must be leashed in the parking lot and trailhead area.
Multiple day hiking or longer trail options/loops are available. Lots of unwary people and dogs are going to get covered in the stuff this summer.

Both canyons are deep and steep, but good bucks can be found here.

A bypass on the left offers access to the canyon's upper reaches. The trailhead provides access to many different trails of varying difficulty levels, and has access to South Boulder Creek. End of the Boynton Canyon Trail Along the trail, there are two detours you can take, to make this hike even more memorable.

The short Surprise Canyon route crosses a broad, grassy drainage before entering a deep canyon in the Waterpocket Fold.

Gold Run Trail: Eight miles north of the campground on Forest Rd.
Turn right at the sign for Colcord road (aka FR 291) and follow this road (which turns to dirt after about 2 miles) for 4 miles to FR200.

After crossing the dry wash bed of Halls Creek, bear slightly left to crest a small, grassy hill.

Visitors will find miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

It's easy to do.

If you can't find accommodations Iin the Grand Canyon Village, try Tusayan, several miles south of the canyon. The Mesa Trail passes 3 different access points for Shadow Canyon between 4.35 and 5.1 miles, all of which lead to South Boulder Peak. The trail gradually tilts down and merges with another service road that begins a long, fast descent through open space to South Mesa Trailhead (6.7 miles : 5,645').

Starting at Cedar Mesa Campground, the Red Canyon Trail bears southwest across a sagebrush flat before climbing a low ridge that affords views of the Henry Mountains to the east. This is one of the closest OHV trails from San Diego.
